Thomas Paine, the father of the American Revolution, was born in Thetford, England on January 29 1737. He lived there until 1774, when he migrated to the American colonies just in time to take part in the American Revolution.
It is said that one out of five families in the colonies owned a copy of the pamphlet, Common Sense (1776), advocating independence from England.
Then General George Washington had the pamphlet, the American Crisis, read aloud to his troops. It is famous for the quote “These are the times that try men’s souls:” and “What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly:” .
He fell from favor with his book, The Age of Reason (1793-94), which advocated deism and took issue with Christian doctrines. They obviously didn’t like that too much.
Paine died in New York City, on June 8, 1809. He was 72.
Personally, I find his writings speak to my soul and encourage any of you to look closer.
